Food

If you were to travel the world and visit countries with a completely different culture from your own, would you be the type of person who would try and eat the local cuisine or would you feel better sticking with food you know? In other words, would you be anxious to try new and exotic foods, or would you be in search of the local McDonald's?

In my case, I'd like to think I'm adventurous but it's not often the case. When we travel to the Dominican Republic, I have a hard time eating goat (a local delicacy). In Australia, I usually stay away from the exotic fish species that find their way on many local menus. Interestingly enough, my wife tends to be more adventurous and is rarely afraid to "eat like the locals." In retrospect, I guess I'm just another wimpy American tourist.

When it comes to food I am very picky. I am not very open-minded to trying new things. I am, however, not afraid to try a small sample of a new food if it looks good to me. Anything that isn't appealing to my eye I am never willing to try.

This past summer I went to Australia. In Australia Kangaroo meat, as well as Emu meat is a delicacy. I was very impressed with myself for sampling both of these meats.

Also while in Australia I ate at fast food restaurants. Compared to America, I thought the food was much better quality in Australia. Some of the fast food restaurants I ate at were McDonald's and Burger King.

Food is something I love and I guess the whole idea behind going to a different country is to get a test of everything. For me I would personally stick to the foods I am used, but I will definitely try a cultural dish in respect for the people and for myself to say yes I have eaten “frogs” before. Not that I have eaten frogs before. McDonalds’s is something we Americans grew up on and that’s always coming to be a craving for us no matter where we travel to.
