What Have You Learned?
Now that the class is winding down, take a moment or two to reflect on what was learned in this course? Is there an area of the world that you now find more interesting? If so, why is it interesting to you?
Lastly- what do you think should have been discussed further? Was there something that should have been given more depth? Perhaps there was an area of the world that we needn't have discussed at all?
In either event, I hope you learned new things from taking the course and above all, your sense of curiosity about world geography has been sparked.

Taking the moment to reflect on what was learned in this course was the different cultures and places one can learned about. I find more counties interesting to me; this class has helped me be more interested in them. I have gotten more interested in Australia, the British Isles and Asia. I felt like Asia has gotten my intension more then the other country I learn in the classroom. I guess the way Mr. Neckes was describing the country had me fascinated the most. The different cultural, the food, and the taboos they have in their country. For example, how the Asians just eat so much fresh food everyday plate after plate after plate and not get huge. Also that u can’t order everything all at once at a restaurant; one has to order little by little.
I feel like everything was discussed as far as we could discuss it and everything was given more depth. I don’t feel like there was an area of the world that we needed to discussed at all. Everything was good as it was and we discussed enough places in this term
What I've learned in this class is that every culture and place is very different from the United States, but there is always something similar to our culture.
Also, many of the American brands are in different countries. For example, McDonald's is very popular in Japan but the menus are different to suit the taste of the Japanese people.
A part of the world that really interested me after being in class is Asia. When Professor Neckes described all the places he went to, one could actually imagine what they are like. I remember he said that somewhere in Malaysia, it is against the law to chew gum, or to not say hello to a tourist. He said that braking any of these rules would be subject to the death penalty. To me, this is very shocking but since it is such a safe place, It would be really nice to go visit and feel that nothing bad is going to happen.
Another cool place I'd like to visit would be Dubai because everything there seems so fancy and glamorous. I would have never thought that the place would be so rich because, everytime one hears about these places, one automatically thinks "terrorist" but as a matter of fact it is a very clean, nice, modern place to be and they are American friendly.
Finally I thought that Amsterdam seemed like an interesting place because they seem to be a very liberal society.
One place that wasn't too interesting was Africa. I don't know if it was because of the video of the old ladies that did not strike my interest or maybe because it just wasn't of my liking.
Overall, I would say I learned a lot in the class because I actually did not know where many of these places were in the map and I still don't really know so that is why I am looking in the book.
We have seen many videos and discussed many countries in this class. I knew a few things about Europe, but other than that, I really did not have a vast sense of knowledge about Asia, The Middle East, Australia and Africa. If I did know some things, they were probably just stereotypes or misconceptions.
The area that intrigued me the most would have to be Asia. The cities in Japan and China are huge. The pictures Professor Neckes showed us really captivated me. The architecture of the buildings is extreme. There were so many huge skyscrapers and other odd shaped buildings. I was also glad to learn more about their culture and their way of life. Food is a very important part of their culture and the food they eat is also very fresh and some of the things I have never seen before in my life. The customs in Japan are very different; they start work at about 9.30 in the morning; throughout the day, they eat about 6 meals.
I also enjoyed learning about the Shi’i and the Sunni, and why they have been fighting for so many years. I also actually would have never thought about visiting anywhere in the Middle East, but with the videos I saw that there are safe places you can go to, you just have to know what to do (for instance being fully clothed if u are a woman).
I don’t think there is no part of the world that we should not have covered. I enjoyed learning about all of the places we discussed and saw and I would love to visit all of them one day.
